My Octopus Teacher walked away with the coveted title of Best Documentary at the British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA’s) in London on Sunday, 11 April.
The ceremony was hosted online this year, like most awards ceremonies during the pandemic.
Pippa Ehrlich, who directed the doccie alongside James Reed, accepted the award on behalf of the production team.
The 2020 Netflix original documentary follows filmmaker Craig Foster’s into the depths of Cape Town’s kelp forest where he ignites a relationship with an octopus. Their interaction is documented over a year, until the octopus dies – and details the intimate and unlikely friendship between a sea creature and a human.

It is a must-see film that is highly unusual, informative and brilliantly captures the undersea world.
My Octopus Teacher beat out heavyweights like Sir David Attenborough’s A Life on Our Planet and Social Dilemma for the top spot of best documentary.
Next up is the Academy Awards, for which the movie has been nominated.
