Parliament’s Nkandla ad hoc committee has now officially adopted the Police Minister’s report that Zuma will not have to pay back public money spent on Nkandla upgrades. This has happened although Nhleko’s report sharply contradicts that of Public Protector Thuli Madonsela. Madonsela found Zuma had to repay a reasonable portion of the R246m spent on upgrades to his home which she pointed out was not security related, such as the building of a swimming pool.
In a statement issued by Parliament spokesperson Temba Gubula, the committee members from all parties found that there were was “gross exaggeration of the scope, scale and cost of the Nkandla project” and that South Africans were “misled about the opulence of the private residence of the president”.
Meanwhile in a heated question and answer debate in Parliament, which almost led to violence, EFF leader Malema said it is clear South Africans will not get an answer from Zuma about paying for the upgrades. Therefore the EFF will take Zuma to court.
