The African National Congress (ANC) said it had delayed its announcement on President Jacob Zuma’s imminent departure as head of state because it needed more time – apparently to inform ANC branches of the decision taken by the national executive committee (NEC).
On Monday night it took the NEC 13 hours to come to some form a decision over Zuma, who is seemingly clinging to power and dividing the ANC – and country – in the process.
Earlier the ANC said it will deliver its announcement at noon on Tuesday to give clarity on the Zumster’s fate. If pathetic reporting from main string media in SA can be trusted, indications are that the ruling party’s top brass decided to force Zuma into some form of ‘go or we will force you out’ path of destruction.
African News Agency quite “media reports” which say the national executive committee – the ANC’s highest decision-making body between conferences – resolved to recall Zuma after he refused to resign.
The scandal-ridden president had reportedly offered to resign, but only in July – something the ANC flatly refused to entertain. Zuma has since told the ANC to “do what it wants to do”.
