Oliver has big beautiful brown eyes that will burn a hole into your soul, and his tragic story will leave you in tears. Workers at Boksburg SPCA were moved to tears when a man “casually” walked into their building on Tuesday, 10 May and handed them a dog curled up in an old rusty bucket.
The tiny cross Dachshund, emaciated from neglect, looked up with the most beautiful big eyes as if to say, “Please help me”.
“It was the most pitiful site we’ve seen in a long time…. There, soaked in car oil, lay a brown, skeletal figure of what looked like a dog,” said the SPCA on Facebook.
According to the owner, the dog has been sick for a long time.
“His owner walked out after being told off by SPCA staff. When we pulled him out the bucket and saw he could still walk, we knew there may be hope,” the SPCA said.
They named him Oliver, and rushed him to a Vet for help. Tons of messages and well wishes poured in from all over the world for Oli.
“Keep fighting Oli a better kinder and more loving life is waiting for you sweet one,” read one Facebook comment.
“Prayers for sweet Oli to heal and find a loving home. I pray he never knows pain and suffering again. ” – read another.
The flood of support in the form of donations for Oli has been overwhelming.
“Our staff often take a knock when dealing with cases such as this. They’re demotivational and soul destroying. Our supporters have come together in just a few hours and have totally restored our faith in humanity,” the SPCA said.
A day later Oliver is still depressed and doesn’t move around a lot. The good news is that he is eating well. The bad news is he’s developed a cough and is still on a drip.
“He’s been given an electric blanket and is eating well. The vet has picked up a bit of a cough and will be x-raying his lungs this afternoon.
“The Boksburg SPCA has been inundated with emails concerning little Oliver so please be patient if we have not yet answered your messages. As soon as we receive feedback from the vet, we will update you. We want our followers to be involved as much as possible,” they said in another Facebook post.
There are so many rooting for Oli to get well, and there is no doubt that he will find a loving home and family to take great care of him.
