Oscar Pistorius is up for parole given he meets the Steenkamps. This, however, does not mean he will be given parole.
In order for Oscar to be considered for parole, he needs to meet with the parents of the late Reeva Steenkamp. This is the first step in his parole process.
“Offenders participate in the victim-offender dialogue as part of their rehabilitation path wherein they are able to acknowledge the harm they have caused to their victims and society at large.”
At this time, meeting with the Steenkamp’s does not guarantee that Oscar will get parole.
“It is important to clarify that a VOD proceeding is not a parole placement process, but a program that takes place prior to an offender being considered for placement.”
Oscar moved to Eastern Cape Jail ahead of meeting the Steenkamps
To make this process happen, Oscar has been moved to an Eastern Cape Jail as the parents of Reeva are located in Gqeberha.
“VODs are sensitive, emotional and inconsolable, hence they are presided by highly trained officials who ought to ensure all parties derive value from the process.”
While this process is underway, there isn’t an exact date on which the Steenkamps will meet him. The process will not be rushed but the parents of the deceased do have some questions for Pistorius.
