Judge Thokozile Masipa (above) sentenced Pistorius to five years in jail for the culpable homicide of Reeva Steenkamp. For discharging a firearm at Tasha’s restaurant he was sentenced to three years in jail, suspended for five years. Both sentences would run concurrently.
Pistorius claimed throughout the trial he thought there was a burglar in his toilet when he fired four shots through the locked door in the early hours of 14 February last year.
Meanwhile the State said they are looking at the possibility of an appeal. National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson, Nathi Mncube, admitted that the organization was “not happy” with the judgement of culpable homicide. “We at this point in time will have to go back and study the judgement, and of course do research to see if there are grounds for appeal, within 14 days. We would have to study the law very carefully, to see that if we take this matter forward are we going to have the law by our side? It is not a question of sentiment … we have to be guided by the law.”
