A 73-year-old grandmother from Palmview Phoenix took matters into her own hands when she found a housebreaker in her property on Wednesday.
The man, armed with a panga, entered her home in the Durban suburb at approximately 2.20pm. It is alleged that he gained entry when her nine-year-old granddaughter left the house. The suspect jumped over a fence and forced the stable door in the kitchen open.
He found the grandmother in her bedroom and demanded cash from her, while threatening her with the panga. The woman screamed for help which spooked the robber who grabbed her handbag and fled to the kitchen looking for items to steal. She followed him and decided he is not going to get away with it – so she grabbed a heavy saucepan and threw it at him. Surprised by the retaliation, he grabbed an electric kettle and made a run for it.
Her daughter arrived moments after the suspect left. Reaction officer were alerted and they conducted a search, to no avail.
The robber was described as a thin, tall man wearing a blue shirt, jeans and a grey beanie. He was also in the possession of a blue nap sack.
You have to commend the grandmother for her ability to use what she had in her sight to defend herself.
