The intense cold front that made landfall over South Africa on Thursday through to the weekend brought icy cold temperatures and a spectacular show of snow.
All the way from the Western Cape to KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape, mountain peaks and high-lying areas turned into a snowy winter wonderland. Snowfall of up to 20cms fell in the Western Cape.
For the first time ever, the Hillcrest area in KZN received snowfall – a clear sign that climate change is a reality and no area is out of bounds for bountiful snow.
Hundreds of snow tourists drove out to areas nearby to make snowmen and play in the white powdery ice. Areas like Himeville in KZN and Ceres in the Western Cape could have easily been mistaken for Canada – where the snowfall is aplenty.
It was indeed a beautiful and unique site to behold.
Farmers and the public were urged to take care of their pets and livestock outside – and to protect them from the icy cold temperatures.
