Four suspects – in possession of R2-million in counterfeit money – will appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday morning following a sting operation in Auckland Park on Friday, 23 August.
Two men, aged 36 and 48 were arrested along with two women aged 57 and 58 by the Gauteng Provincial Commercial Crime Unit and Crime Intelligence Unit.
According to a police report, the unit received reliable information that four suspects were in possession of large sums of counterfeit notes and were planning to commit a crime.
“An intelligence driven operation was conducted and police pounced on four suspects who were found in possession of R2 million. Police established though an official from the Reserve Bank that the notes were indeed counterfeit. The four suspects were arrested and charged with possession of counterfeit money,” read the media statement.

According to the South African Reserve Bank, these are the features you should look out for
- A watermark formed within the paper – When held up to the light, the image is visible and will not produce on colour copiers;
- A security thread running through the banknote paper – A special thread is woven into the paper.
