“SARS customs officials intercepted a Lebanese male passenger en route to Dubai carrying 17 rectangular gold bars and three circular bars weighing 23kg worth more than R7 million at OR Tambo International Airport yesterday,” said the revenue service on Monday.
According to SARS, the man was leaving the country without proper documentation on Sunday. His luggage was scanned and irregular images were identified and a hand search found these to be gold bars estimated at R7.033.600.
“The traveller produced self-generated invoices. The suspect has been handed over to the SAPS [South African Police Service] but SARS Customs has detained the goods for further investigations,” said the revenue service.
