Levine will be playing across the UK in November and December, from Bristol to Brighton down south, Norwich to Elloughton in the east, Warwick and Yorskshire up north and of course, London.
Says Laurie, “I can’t wait to drive through England and visit all the towns. I’m going to be travelling by car so will get a real feel for the country. But most importantly I’m really excited to play for completely new audiences.”
Kicking off her UK tour in Bristol on 26 November, Laurie will be opening for American country singer Oh Susanna, followed by an opening slot for UK folk musician Matthews Southern Comfort in Whitstable on 29 November. Besides these introductions to new audiences, Levine will also play a various solo shows across the UK including the traditional South African acoustic haven, the Half Moon in south London.
Laurie lived in London for a brief three months after university and was flown over in 2005 when she was asked to open for the iconic Rodriguez. A few years later in 2009, she was flown to Switzerland to perform at the World Economic Forum, invited by the International Marketing Council of South Africa.
It is with great excitement that Levine’s music will now be more readily available in Europe. Bob Paterson, head of BPA Live, was introduced to Levine’s music through Martin Elbourne, former manager for The Smiths and New Order and Director of the much esteemed MAMA group (including HMV live, Mean Fiddler, The Great Escape and more). When asked what Elbourne thought of Levine after seeing her live at the Music Network Showcase in Johannesburg in 2011, he simply says, “One of the best Americana artists I’ve seen live in quite a while.” Which also proves why it only took Martin two weeks of mailing booking agents in the UK about Levine, before Bob Paterson jumped at the chance to work with her.;
Laurie Levine is a prolific songwriter, has a soulful voice that breathes life into her songs and embodies the emotional core of her lyrics. Her music comes from the ‘heartspace’, a word coined by poet Breyten Breytenbach to describe South Africa’s anguished beauty. Her songs touch our unspoken corners and her sounds are a contemporary interpretation of true folk.;
Six Winters was released in South Africa in 2011, six years since she released her first album, Unspoken (2007), followed by the highly acclaimed Living Rooms in 2009.
