The Stats SA analysis says the murder hot spots are in Cape Town, eThekwini, Mnquma, Sol Plaaitjie, Nala, City of Matlosana, Polokwane, Emalahleni and Westonaria.
The main motive for killing in SA was jealousy – committed by people aged 15–34 – while the main motive for murder committed by people aged 35–54 years was money and financial reasons.
The findings indicate about half of people in urban areas who had been murdered knew the perpetrator. The findings are based on the cluster and hot spot analysis of individuals who have experienced murder as recorded by the South African Police Service (SAPS).
These stats indicated that in urban metros guns (78,4%) were the most commonly used weapon to commit murder, followed by a knife (12,9%). In other urban areas knives where used in half of the murders and rural settlements 33,3% of the murders. Other weapons used in rural areas were guns (19.4%), axes, metal bars and whatever came to hand.
