‘Secret’ inflated Matric mark furore as results are released today

As Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga plans to announce the National Senior Certificate (NSC) Examination Results today (Wednesday), a furore has erupted over the secret upward adjustment of the results in at least 28 of the 58 National Senior Certificate subjects written by the Matric class of 2016.

Only 3% of South African learners can do maths

The Department of Basic Education said the announcement will be made in Midrand, near Johannesburg while the DA’s Shadow Minister of Basic Education Gavin Davis wrote an open letter to national Matric exam assurance body Umalusi asking why certain subjects were chosen for mark increases.

In the letter, Davis disclosed confidential information about the Matric 2016 mark adjustments, which was revealed during a recent “standardisation meeting” with Umalusi and the department, which he attended.

Davis wrote that “some of the subjects saw a dramatic upwards adjustment”, which included maths and maths literacy. Davis said attendees of the meeting were given data books on the mark adjustments and were told which marks would be adjusted. The data books were marked confidential and he was given a confidentiality agreement to sign, which he did not do – on the grounds that his duty to act in the public interest overrode it.

Davis said there was no reason why the Matric results – and their adjustments – should not be open for the public to scrutinise.

Today should see some answers as the department of education’s Director General is expected to give an in-depth technical briefing into the results, allowing for a greater understanding into how the processes involved in administering the NSC Examinations, marking and scoring.

The department says the class of 2016 can access their results in various newspapers and media websites on Thursday, using only Exam Numbers.
