Well – the result is perlemoen (abalone) poaching and smuggling. But how much can you take. A lot, if you look at this guy.
A 35-year old man is now in police custody after he was nabbed with abalone worth close to R2 million following a high speed chase on the N2 highway near Strand, Western Cape police said.
Police spokeswoman Noloyiso Rwexana said officers were tipped off about a “suspicious vehicle” travelling from either Caledon or Hermanus on the N2.
“The vehicle was spotted and a high speed chase ensued,” said Rwexana.
“Police managed to stop the vehicle and several bags containing 6,965 abalone with an estimated street value of R1.7 million was found.”
Officers later discovered the vehicle was stolen in Strandfontein last year.
The suspect was expected to appear in the Strand Magistrate’s court on Monday.
