The British Press Association says Dewani left the UK last night escorted by two senior South African police officers. He will make his first appearance at the Western Cape High Court in Cape Town at 11:30.
A Home Office spokesperson said: “We can confirm that Shrien Dewani was extradited on Monday 7 April from the UK to South Africa.”
Dewani played every trick in the book to prevent extradition convincing the UK courts for over 3 years that he suffered from post-traumatic stress and other mental illnesses. He lost his final appeal last month. Now the South African court would have the final say on whether he is fit to stand trial.
He claims he and Anni were kidnapped at gunpoint as they drove through Gugulethu in Cape Town in a taxi in November 2010. The couple had been on honeymoon in the country. Dewani was released unharmed while his wife’s body was found in the abandoned car the next day. She had been shot dead.
Xolile Mngeni was convicted of the murder and jailed for life. Prosecutors alleged Dewani hired him to kill his wife. Two other accomplices are also serving jail terms in connection with the crimes. Dewani denies all charges blaming their hijackers for the murder of his wife. Similarly Pistorius claims he was fearful of being attacked by intruders in his house and shot four shots into his toilet door in self defence.
