When the air is this crisp in the morning, you can bet there’s snowfall on the mountain tops not too far away. Some areas in the Western and Eastern Cape are covered in snowfall as temperatures dipped to below freezing on Monday, July 12.
A traffic advisory was issued for the Eastern Cape – warning motorists of bad road conditions.
Please take note of the following information:
1. Reports of light snowfall and poor driving conditions along the N6 section 5 between Komani & Jamestown at or near the Penhoek pass, there is also a heavy duty truck that has jack-knifed and is blocking the road. Motorists are advised to drive with extra caution and consider using alternative routes.
2. Reports of slippery and dangerous driving conditions along the R61 at the Wapadsberg pass between Cradock and Graaff-Reinet. Motorists are advised to drive with extra caution and consider using alternative routes.
3. The Barkly Pass along the R58 between Elliot and Barkly East is clear and driveable at the moment although there are some crystals falling. The situation is currently being monitored and further updates will be provided should the situation change.
South African vehicles do not have snow tyres and are not kitted out for these weather conditions.
The Matroosberg Reserve, as well as Ceres and mountains near Stellenbosch were snowcapped on Tuesday morning.
