The South Africa national team is filled with very talented footballers who represent some of the strongest teams across Africa. Players from SA are known for being technically astute and it is no surprise that they stand out at their club sides.
With that in mind, we will be evaluating the form of some popular Bafana Bafana stars and how they are faring at club level in the ongoing 2021/22 season.
The use of live soccer statistics from Overlyzer has provided us with the necessary tools to base our findings. Hence, here is how some key South African players are performing at their respective teams.
Percy Tau
The Al Ahly attacker has only featured three times for the Red Devils but already hit a brace which earned him the fans Player of the Week award on his league debut.
The player ended his Brighton adventure earlier this year by returning to Africa with THE biggest club on the continent. The 27-year-old is getting settled in his new surroundings under his old mentor Pitso Mosimane.
The Former PSL Player of The Season is one of the most skillful players in Africa. Although the decision to end his European career early raised more than a few eyebrows, Tau is nicely set up for success and will look forward to a trophy-laden spell in Egypt.
Luther Singh
Singh signed for Danish giants Copenhagen for a reported €1.5 million after spending four years at Braga. The 24-year-old winger made the big move having spent last season on loan at Pacos De Ferreira and represented his country at the 2020 summer Olympic Games.
However, the Bafana Bafana man is being eased into the team and has yet to start a game for the Lions but his talent would certainly shine through. Singh is adept with pace and dribbling such that he creates attacking opportunities for his teammates.
So far, the forward has taken in nine appearances in all competitions including the UEFA Europa Conference League, and given his brilliant skills, it is only a matter of time until he becomes a mainstay in Jess Thorup’s side.
Teboho Mokoena
This one-club man has been at Supersport United throughout his career and scored Bafana Bafana’s winner in the recent FIFA World Cup qualifier against neighbors Zimbabwe.
The midfielder latched onto an inch-perfect Keagan Dolly cross to head into the far. However, South Africa’s qualification efforts ended fruitlessly in controversial circumstances against Ghana.
Mokoena is a very reliable performer who also participated in the 2020 Olympic Games as an over-age player where he found the net against France in their second group stage game.
With two goals and an assist in ten games for Matsatsantsa so far in 2021/22, the 24-year-old has maintained his consistency and there is more to come with his team ranked third on the league standings.
Evidence Makgopa
The Lanky forward has been on a rapid rise since making his professional debut for Baroka last year. Makgopa went on to score a brace on his international debut and has been the toast of South African football since.
The 21-year-old quickly emerged within the domestic shores of the DSTV Premiership as well as the South African national team and already boasts three goals in six international appearances.
Makgopa also featured on the 2020 Olympics team where he scored a goal, and the PSL Young Player of The Season courted interest from big clubs in South Africa but stayed put.
Amidst his burgeoning reputation, the striker has kept his head down and registered two goals with as many assists in eight league games for Bakgakga.
Keagan Dolly
The 28-year-old has been one of the most influential players in the PSL so far with five goals and four assists in 11 games this season.
The versatile attacker is in particularly scintillating form after he single-handedly demolished Orlando Pirates with a brace in the 2-1 win in the recent Soweto Derby.
Dolly’s incredible displays prompted a return to the Bafana Bafana fold where he was last seen in 2020, and many hopes were placed on him in their crucial FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Zimbabwe and Ghana. He laid on a beautiful assist against the former nonetheless.
The former Montpellier man-made the family-motivated decision to return to his homeland over the summer and it is paying huge dividends for the supremely talented playmaker.
