Dlamini was arrested at his student residence at the weekend on five charges, which include interesting things related to student life: theft and assault.
Magistrate Albertus Roux (can we bet he will soon be labelled a racist? Ed.) said it’s not in the interest of justice to grant Dlamini bail. He will enjoy prison life until he appears in court again next month.
Meanwhile the Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi said his department will review the financial support it’s giving to Dlamini. It is the Gauteng Education Department that is funding Dlamini’s studies.
Magistrate Roux ruled the affidavit Dlamini submitted in his bail application is not convincing and has contradictory statements presented in evidence. Roux also referred to photographs of Dlamini holding stones during student protests.
We can assume Dlamini was not building a rock garden, especially if you take into consideration he was dancing with a helmet and shield belonging to the university’s private security.
