Telkom will remove Netflix from their phones and set-top boxes from October after the two companies failed to renew their standing contract.

The deal, signed between the two parties has come to a conclusion, and according to Content Executive Wanda Mkhize, it will not be renewed. Mkhize did not give any further information regarding the split. Instead, she alluded to other content partnerships which will be announced shortly.

By the end of 2021 Netflix is expected to have 2.61 million streaming subscribers in Africa and more than double that to 5.84 million by 2026 – business intelligence company Digital TV Research projected. These numbers make Netflix the leader in the online streaming space on the African continent.

The MultiChoice Group, which is Africa’s largest pay-TV provider, has signed deals with Netflix and Amazon.com to offer their streaming services through a new decoder.
