It is a dark day in South Africa’s culinary history – one of the countries crown jewels, The Test Kitchen, announced it will be closing its doors permanently at the end of September. If a restaurant heaped with culinary awards and star-studded accolades cannot find its way out of the destruction the industry finds itself in, what chance do the rest have?
A statement was issued on Thursday regarding the closure of the beloved restaurant by LDR Communications read:
On the 30th of September Cape Town’s iconic culinary landmark, @thetestkitchenct, will serve its last meal and close its doors. After 11 wonderful, celebrated, and award-winning years, Luke has decided that the time is right to close The Test Kitchen permanently and concentrate on other projects.
The Test Kitchen leaves behind an industry moulded by its creativity and success, and myriad chefs plying their trade at fine institutions around Cape Town, South Africa, and the world, all of whom cut their teeth in the famous kitchen under the watchful eye and mentorship of Luke Dale Roberts.
Luke Dale Roberts and his Test Kitchen, will leave a deep legacy and has played an important part in the modern history South African restaurant industry.
It is a sad announcement, but also exciting as Luke explores new, exciting projects.
“I felt it was the right time”, says Luke. “The food we are producing is some of the best since we opened, and I am immensely proud of that.”
“I believe that creativity comes in cycles, and I feel like I have come to the end of this creative cycle. With the current global uncertainty around COVID it has become very difficult to sustain a restaurant of this kind and maintain everything that I believe in.”
“I’d like to unreservedly thank everyone who has been a part of The Test Kitchen over the years. The staff, loyal guests, and everyone else who played a part in this incredible time of my life, and I look forward to continuing my creative journey”.
For now, Luke continues to devote himself to @thepotluckclubct, The Test Kitchen @ttkfledgelings , the social upliftment dining venture between himself and wife @sandalene_dale_roberts and looks forward to announcing his upcoming projects in the future.
The Test Kitchen is currently ranked #44 on @theworlds50best Restaurants list of the finest restaurants around the globe!
Fans shared memories and thoughts on the closure of the beloved restaurant calling it a travesty to the culinary scene.
“So sad to hear the iconic Test Kitchen is closing its doors… it was such a privilege to be able to dine there with the exceptional food and delightful wine list… a very sad day for the industry 😢😢😢,” said one Instagram user.
“Always a bucket list destination for the rich and famous when visiting Cape Town, it’s reputation preceded itself across the globe,” said another.
No doubt, the fine dining establishment will be missed for its sheer brilliance in culinary delight and innovative conceptualisation of dishes. Luke Dale-Roberts is unmatched in his genius.
