The controversial water ‘expert’ Dr Masaru Emoto is in South Africa as part of his ‘Way of the Water Tour 2008’. He has been seen several times out and about in the Mother City, blessing several bodies of water large and small for local spectators. Dr Emoto’s theory states that the molecular structure of water changes depending on the emotional charge of the human speech or thought directed at it. If the water is frozen, the water crystals contained in each instance of positive and negative thought is visually different, ‘beautiful’ and ‘ugly’ respectively.
Dr Emoto was born in Yokohama, Japan, and graduated from Yokohama Municipal University. In 1992 he became a certified Doctor of Alternative Medicine at the unaccredited Open International University for Alternative Medicine in India. Dr Masaru’s experimentation consists of exposing normal water to words, pictures and music, thereafter freezing each example and examining the aesthetics of the water crystals formed.
However Dr Emoto has been criticised for allowing human error to influence the final results. James Randi, founder of the James Randi Educational Foundation has offered Dr Emoto one million dollars if he can reproduce his findings in a double-blind study. Double-blind studies are renowned as a stringent means of eliminating biases and subjectivity in experiments, contributing to a more acceptable conclusion. Despite his condemnation as a ‘true scientist’, Dr Masaru Emoto elaborates on his world-wide tour that drinking water which has been exposed to positive thoughts and feelings has a positive effect on health.
