After a successful and strong haul of sardines along the south coast of South Africa, the 2021 Sardine Run has come to a close.
In an announcement on Facebook on Wednesday, The Sardine Run 2021 Community Page said:
“The 2021 sardine run will be remembered for the masses sardines the reached our coast line!Unfortunately it will also be remembered for the devastating riots that destroyed infrastructure, the looting of shops, businesses and much more, throughout the KZN Province. This disrespectfull behaviour of certain people in our communities, forced the SARDINE RUN also to a halt.Thank you to all our followers, netters and other role players, that contributed to a very successful experience. We can just hope and pray that this barbaric behaviour will never happens again!See you next year, same place, same time! Sardine Run 2021 team.”
The Sardine Run, also known as the Greatest Shoal on Earth, swam to shore on May 30 and has brought great nettings most weeks. This year’s event has been marred by COVID-19 and the riots in Durban. Tension within communities spilled over into people gathering for the run.
It also brought communities together – at the height of the food shortage during the riots, the sardines netted were donated to families at no cost to feed their families.
Until next year…
