Two powerful educational institutions in South Africa have joined forces to launch Africa’s first university-based online high school.
In a joint announcement, they said: “The University of Cape Town has partnered with the Valenture Institute to launch the UCT Online High School. This is a first for a university in Africa and it follows months of discussions, research and engagements with the university Council, government and other key stakeholders.”
The UCT Online High School will offer a CAPS-aligned curriculum which prepares students for the National Senior Certificate (NSC) exam. Admissions opened on 21 July 2021 and classes will commence in January 2022.
In a statement, they said that the UCT Online High School is an expression of the transformative purpose the university has committed to as part of Vision 2030 – to unleash human potential for a fair and just society.
“The university is playing its part in addressing the systemic challenges facing the country’s basic education system. This is also where the academic excellence of UCT can be extended to high school learners across all communities in South Africa.”
Online courses and schooling has become more popular since the pandemic and UCT Online High School will capitalise on this shift in education.
“The full curriculum of the UCT Online High School will also be available as an open education resource throughout South Africa. This means learners will have free access to a self-paced curriculum where they can progress at their own pace,” UCT said.
