Beeld newspaper reports that David Alexander Barclay (Sandy), 66, was not armed when he went to investigate a noise on a farm while visiting friends. Barclay was sitting with friends and relatives at about 8pm on the veranda of the house when he heard dogs barking. He took his flashlight and went to investigate.
The friends heard shots being fired. As the owner of the farm went to see what has happened, he was confronted by a man with a gun demanding money.
According to the Beeld news report the man said: “We don’t keep money here. Stop it in Jesus’s name.” Another man arrived. He was aggressive and also asked for money and instructed his friend to shoot, but they just disappeared into the dark.
Barclay was found lying in a pool of blood. He had been shot in the neck. Barclay was widely respected in South Africa as well as the UK as an accountant.
