The internet gives us all access to the world and by surfing around on YouTube, Facebook, News24 and a bit of Google here and there, I was astonished at how South Africans stand together and support their country. It’s not based on the fact that we have won the 2007 Rugby World Cup (yes, we did, THANK YOU SPRINGBOKS!) it is based on my observation of South Africans actions before and during all the games.
All over the internet; photos, videos, emails, groups & chat threads e.g. Facebook and blogs were flooded with support for the Springboks. South Africans all over the world were displaying photos and videos of themselves and their friends in their Springbok attire. The most memorable I have seen is a video on YouTube taken inside Canal Walk Shopping Centre in Cape Town, packed with supporters putting forward a raging unified front in full support of the Springboks.
We are all proud to be South African and even prouder than ever before!
This was evidence enough for me that we, as a nation, have moved on from our past and irrespective of race, we are all coming together.
Sport in the immediate future:
• South African vs Wales 24th of November ‘07 in Cardiff
• Barbarians vs South Africa 1st of December ’07 at Twickenham.
Sport in the longer term:
YES, the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. This is a topic frequently debated, especially by South Africans and what has been said is not always positive. I am not going to debate or give an uneducated opinion based on what I have heard or read but I do want to point out some obvious positives that the public tend to focus on last:
a) It will improve South Africa’s tourism.
b) It will pay for stadiums and infrastructure like transport that will still be there after the event for South Africans to use.
c) It will create jobs and increase South Africa’s revenue
d) It will increase property values.
All thanks to Fifa for bringing the world cup to SA in 2010. So that’s it from me, I am focusing on what’s current and positive. Thank you for reading and please take the time to visit the websites below as each of them represents the greater good for South Africa as a whole and all have useful information you might just enjoy or benefit from.
