A rescue organiser from the Mountain Club of South Africa, Steve Cook says while details are still sketchy, it is believed that the hiker got into difficulty in the remote Mweni area.
He says a South African Air Force helicopter with a paramedic and members of the Mountain Clud was despatched from Durban.
The Mnweni region is located in the northern Drakensberg, south of the Royal Natal National Park and north of Cathedral Peak.
Cooke said that there had been no radio communications with the rescue team, as there was a poor signal from what is one of the more remote areas of the Drakensberg.
It is not clear when the hiker got into difficulty.
