Which members of the LOC made trips to Paris in 2004? This could establish the identity of a “high-ranking South African bid committee official” who handed over a briefcase full of cash to a family member of former FIFA vice-president Jack Warner, at a Paris hotel as a bribe to secure his vote for South Africa to host the World Cup in 2010.
These and other questions have been tabled in the South African parliament to try and establish if South Africa is indeed intertwined in the web of corruption and ongoing scandal that has engulfed football’s governing body.
The Democratic Alliance says in a statement South Africans deserve to know if money changed hands improperly to secure South Africa’s 2010 Football World Cup.
Other questions tabled are:
- Who authorised the payment from FIFA to CONCACAF on behalf of South Africa?
- With whom did this representative communicate at FIFA to authorise the payment?
- Why was this money allocated to CONCACAF out of all the world football confederations, including the Confederation of African Football?
The man with the answers is President of SAFA and part-time mayor of Nelson Mandela Metropolitan municipality, Danny Jordaan, who already confirmed that an amount of $10 million was indeed paid to CONCACAF. He now claims the money was to support football development. It was not a bribe, he says.
