What better way to honour World Chocolate Day than to take a stroll down memory lane and pay homage to the best South African chocolates no longer on the shelves.
1. Chocolate Log
A year ago, Nestlé discontinued the humble yet delicious Chocolate Log. Needless to say, South Africans were not happy. In a statement, Nestlé said: “Our purpose is to delight our consumers through tastier and healthier products. We know that one of the main drivers of the chocolate category is innovation and that consumers love new products.”
2. Caravan chocolate bar
Caravan chocolates were quietly taken out of production several years ago by Nestlé. The bar had a delicious layer of caramel tucked between light wafer crisps, covered in milk chocolate.
3. Cadbury’s Cabrio Chocolate
This is a blast from the past. Cabrio was very similar in taste and texture to a Tempo bar. It had a funky wrapping and was discontinued by Cadbury in 2006.
4. Take Two
If you don’t remember the chocolate, you’ll definitely remember the advert! Take two shortcake biscuits… take caramel and cover them… dip them into chocolate… all it takes is two, take two, take two! And the chocolate was exactly what the advert said it was – shortcake biscuits, caramel and chocolate.
5. Perky Nana
Cadbury’s Perky Nana was a banana flavoured chocolate bar covered in delicious milk chocolate. It was one of the cheapies on the market and always hit the sweet craving spot. It was an unusual tasting chocolate and nothing has replaced it since it was discontinued many years ago.
6. Inside Story
Beacon produced Inside Story and just like the name suggests, it was all about the soft, smooth, truffle-like chocolate on the inside which was dotted with shortcake biscuit pieces. It crept off the shelves a few years ago without anyone noticing.
7. Tempo
Cadbury Tempo Bar also suffered the same ill-fate as the rest of the six above. It was described as a “shortcake biscuit and caramel covered in Cadbury’s dairy milk chocolate”, and every bit as decadent as it sounds. It was taken off the shelf the same time as Chocolate Log was.
