Treedom in Wilderness is a place of fantasy, somewhere where you feel like you are stepping into a magical world created just for you. A passion and dream of founders Marc and Debbie Nortje, Treedom Villas and Vardos, is a place so many have called ‘their favourite destination’ after their first, second and third visit.
After many challenges, including a global pandemic which crippled the tourism industry, Treedom started construction on their Gypsy style Vardos on 1 February 2021 ahead of the new travel season.
“Vardos truly encapsulate what we want to create here at Treedom – enchantment,” says Debbie.
According to Marc, it’s all about the natural environment. “We believe that the natural environment we find ourselves in should be treated with the utmost respect, therefore to reduce harm to our surroundings, and to make it extra special, all building materials have been carried in by hand, no heavy vehicles,” he says.
Treedom will welcome the first visitors to the Vardos from 10 May 2021.
The word Vardo derives from the Iranian word vurdon, for cart or wagon. Gypsy Vardo living is a trip back in time, to a place where highly skilled craftsmen were commissioned by wealthy Romani, Gypsy or Carnival owners to create magnificent livable and moveable works of art.
Today, there are only a few original Vardos in existence, mostly in museums and in the hands of private collectors. The reason for this is back in the day when the owner died, it was custom to burn all his belongings, including the Vardo, for the Romani’s believed that a dead person’s possessions should not be sold.
“Treedom’s Vardos are designed to give you the Gypsy magic experience that is signature to Treedom. Expect a spectacular, one-of-a-kind stay with luxurious and relaxing interior, while the exteriors are over-the-top and dramatic. Just like those in history, Vardos have their own stories, and just like each family decorated and painted their Vardo, so have we,” adds Marc and Debbie.
The Vardos are additions to the already beautiful setting of Treedom Villas and Vardos, consisting of a luxury Treehouse Villa, a sauna, love pool, swinging day bed, braai facilities and more. As it’s also situated in a private forest, guests can enjoy beautiful walks, speed boat trips on the lakes, 4×4 buggy rides on the property. You can even pick some vegetables from Debbie’s garden or enjoy some eggs from their chickens.
