Is the B-word unacceptable?

Now that Economic Freedom Fighters leader Themba Wele was kicked out of the Bhisho legislature for calling white people Boers, the question arises how offensive is this word in the first place? The Sowetan reported that Eastern Cape legislature speaker Noxolo Kiviet kicked Wele out of the House on for referring to white people in his speech as "amaBhulu" (boers). Wele was making his party's presentation during the debate on Eastern Cape Premier Phumulo Masualle's state of the province address. He was speaking about the expropriation of agricultural land when he said: "You have not mentioned plans to expropriate land for agricultural projects because niyawoyika amabhulu okany nilala nawo ngengubo enye (you are scared of Boers or maybe you share the same blanket with them)."

Is the B-word unacceptable?

ANC MPL Mxolisi Dimaza raised a point of order, saying the use of the word Boer was unparliamentary and that Wele should retract the statement. Wele refused and was asked to leave the house. Sapa reports this was the second time in a week that he had been thrown out of the legislature. On Friday last week Wele and his EFF counterpart Siyabulela Peter were kicked out for wearing red overalls and hard hats.

The question now arises: Is it inappropriate to refer to white people or even white farmers as Boers? What do they call themselves? We know many whites that will refer to themselves as ‘Boers’ or ‘Boere’ (the Afrikaans form of the word) without ever thinking it’s offensive. What is the alternative? White Afrikaners?

Meanwhile, police were called in to remove EFF MPLs from the Gauteng legislature because they were not dressed properly. What will we call them?
