All the hipsters from Paris to New York are talking about these guys and while no one knows what they are saying, they love them to the death. Even Fred Durst of Limp Bizkit fame is catching on. On his Twitter he said, “I fucking LOVE your music, vibe and chemistry. Take them by the fucking neck and choke’m down! Die Antwoord!”
Die Antwoord are a South African rave rap band from the Cape Flats, made up of Watkin Tudor Jones (also known as Ninja), Yo-landi Visser and DJ Hi-Tek. Their lyrics are explicit in Afrikaans and English and they call their particular style of rap ‘zef’ which is South African street slang for anything from redneck and white trash to common and
I heard they were playing before us at South by South West (SXSW) music conference in Austin, Texas in March and that they were on a Dutch label which seems now not the case as they are about to be signed to Interscope, home of Dr Dre and Eminem.
I spoke to a girl in Amsterdam who has Yo-landi Visser as an iPhone screensaver and another in NY showing me links on the interweb… The site actually crashed after being overloaded with the demand which forced them to move it to a US server. The music video ‘Enter the ninja’ has now reached over 2 million viewers. That’s unheard of for a South African band! There is also a mini documentary showing the background influences to their music.
