The legendary DC Comics actor who portrays Aquaman (a.k.a. Arthur Curry), the inimitable Jason Momoa recently announced a split from long-time partner Lisa Bonnet. The revelation sent shockwaves through Hollywood and the Twitterverse here in South Africa. Jason Momoa and Lisa Bonnet are, of course, a beautifully mixed couple. Lisa Bonnet was married to legendary rocker Lenny Kravitz from 1987 to 1993, later marrying long-time sweetheart Jason Momoa from 2017 to 2022. However, they are now officially separated and share two children.
He is the son of a painter father – Joseph, and a photographer mother – Coni. His heritage is part Hawaiian, part Samoan, on his father’s side. And on his mother’s side, he’s part Native American, part Irish, and part German. A true son of the world. His larger-than-life screen presence and outsized talent made him a natural selection for DC Comics’ Aquaman character.
So, who is Aquaman, and what’s his Claim to Fame?
According to DC Comics and yours truly, Aquaman is kind of like Blade – he’s a hybrid of both worlds. Aquaman is definitely not Wesley Snipes, though – he is the son of an Atlantean queen and a lighthouse keeper dad. He can bridge both worlds – the surface and the realm of the undersea. As the monarch of the submerged world and the Kingdom of Atlantis, he is de facto King of the Seven Seas. If he were of Greek heritage, he’d be in the Age of the Gods – no jokes about it. Aquaman’s power is so great that it rivals Greek Gods like Zeus, Poseidon, Hades, Athena, Hercules, and Aphrodite. He is King of the Undersea, and he controls a gigantic kingdom.
All of the deep-sea creatures fall under Aquaman’s sphere of influence, yet he rules with grace and majesty. As legend has it, Arthur Curry became one of the greatest-ever Kings of Atlantis. So great are his exploits, so powerful are his abilities, that he is also one of the founding members of the Justice League of America. He took his rightful place among superhero figures in Wonder Woman, Superman, Batman, and The Flash. He can communicate with sea creatures, and his strength is beyond the realms of human belief. Anyone who underestimates the King of Atlantis does so at their own peril.
Back to reality – Why did Jason Momoa Split with Lisa Bonnet?
One thing we’ve come to appreciate about DC Comics and Marvel Comics actors is their fluidity. They come and go, but the characters are eternal. The Hollywood rumour mill has it that the two superstars broke up after 16 years because Lisa Bonnet wants to learn how to be authentically herself. She wants to reinvent herself and accept an invitation from the universe to pursue things that she wants to pursue. Lisa Bonnet wants to tap into her value system and explore her roots further. It’s esoteric stuff, but it sounds like it’s serious enough to keep them apart.
In true Hollywood style, the power couple released their joint statement on 12 January 2021. One can’t help but feel that we live through transformational times (once again, look what’s happening in the world), as they so rightly stated. It’s about evolution, and if there’s one thing we know about his alter ego, Aquaman, this character is ready to take on super-sized challenges in this world or the next. Jokes aside, both Jason and Lisa appear to be taking it in their stride and parenting their two beautiful children as best they can.
