If you scroll through the reviews on Trip Advisor or Google Reviews of visits to world-famous Ronnie’s Sex Shop, you will almost certainly believe there’s a happy ending, but not the way you imagined.
Ronnie’s Sex Shop is a regular pitstop for tourists meandering along the R62 in the Klein Karoo. One thing is for sure from the positive reviews, they definitely satisfy their customers – but with booze and great grub – not sex.
The walls are covered in writing and there are bras hanging overhead at the bar, but that’s all in the charm of an authentic ‘this is not a sex shop’ experience.
What started out as a prank to lure in more customers has turned into an iconic location that visitors ‘must’ stop at along this route.
His friends added the word Sex as a joke
In actual fact, Frank Ronald Price (Ronnie) bought the property to open up a farm stall with fresh produce and aptly named it Ronnie’s Shop. Unfortunately, the business didn’t thrive with this name on the wall so his friends decided to add the word Sex to the name as a joke – and it worked a charm!
Business immediately lifted, pun intended, and soon Ronnie couldn’t keep up with the traffic pouring into the store. Together with his mates who renamed the store, they conjured up a plan to open up a pub instead. And this is how the legend of Ronnie’s Sex Shop ‘came’ to be.
Ronnie struggled to make ends meet due to the lack of tourists and locals during lockdown, but the shop remains open for trade and hopefully soon the traffic will return and the sex shop will keep up the good work – another well-earned pun.
