Having just spent eight weeks in my native Zimbabwe after an absence of a whopping seven years, it feels like my personal life is also amidst a spring cleaning of its own. I moved to the UK in 2003 to pursue a career in music and after gaining experience in the only way there is, by getting involved hands on, mainly as a member of Mann Friday, I now feel well informed to start laying down new foundations to see my solo career also continue to thrive.
The differences in who I was when I left Zimbabwe seven years ago compared to who I am now were highlighted during my stay in Harare over the past few weeks. It was also interesting to see the differences between homely southern Africa and the urban jungle that is London. The obvious things like having more space back home and enjoying a slow-paced lifestyle compared to that of the big smoke were a pleasure to experience.
Spring for me, sees my going into hibernation funny enough, to write new songs for my next solo release and then I start working towards touring the globe, with countries like Zimbabwe, South Africa, Holland, Germany, Australia and the US being prime targets over the next year. I’m already currently in talks to play the Harare International Festival of the Arts this April. I’ve grown as an artist on the streets of London, getting the education I need from gigging in places like Camden, Old Street and Putney. When this summer arrives, it will be time to take flight and go where the music takes me. Onwards and upwards.
