One of South Africa’s most formidable restaurants, Foliage, will close its doors permanently on 25 April 2021. The fine-dining eatery has won several awards and has consistently been placed as one of South Africa’s top 20 restaurants to dine at.
The concept of fresh first, and forest to table, dining experience is what earned Foliage respect in the culinary world. It is the simplicity of the ingredients, paired with incredible wines that elevated the food.

In 2018, Head Chef Chris Erasmus won Eat Out’s coveted Chef of Chef’s award. In a post on Facebook, Erasmus announced the closure of the restaurant on 31 March, which was met with heartfelt messages and condolences.
Erasmus wrote:
“Dear Friends

One social media user called Foliage the ‘best restaurant’ she’s ever had the pleasure of dining at.
Another said: “Our hearts truly go out to you. It’s incredibly hard to loose something one has worked so hard for. Take comfort from the fact that you and your team has been part of creating incredible memories for your diners that they will cherish forever! Best of luck!“
A traveller from Ireland said, “The all time best, in the world. We’ve tried hard to find a better dining experience but never could. Thank you and best wishes from Ireland.”
Lockdown has claimed many top restaurants as its victims. Another highly-awarded fine-dining spot near Pretoria, Mosaic at The Orient, headed by Chef Chantel Dartnell closed their doors this week. Dartnell has won several international awards for her culinary excellence through the years.
The Restaurant at Waterkloof, arguably one of the most beautiful settings in all of South Africa, also closed down earlier this year. The restaurant earned the number one spot at the Eat Out Awards, knocking the Test Kitchen from the top for the first time in six years.
