If you felt the Earth tremble a little at 6.30 on Friday morning, you weren’t imagining it – a light magnitude 3.5 earthquake was recorded 4.3km southwest of Boksburg in Gauteng at exactly 06:34:52 SAST.
The news was shared by Volcano Discovery Website shortly after news began circulating on social media early on Friday, 30 July.
An earthquake alert was shared on the Facebook page Severe Weather and Information Centre SA – they asked their members to share information on their personal experience.
One Facebook user who lives in Germiston described the tremor as intense. Another who also lives in Germiston said that due to the extensive mining in the area, earthquakes always felt more intense.
“Felt like the earth was disappearing underneath me in Atlasville, Bokburg… Scary…” said another.
“Felt in Alberton (Meyersdal) windows rattled,” said someone.
