The death toll of the Manenberg Cat Killer has risen to 21 cats over the past few weeks, and the Animal Welfare Society of South Africa (AWS) has raised funds for a substantial reward to catch the person responsible. In the last 48 hours, a further four cats were found disembowelled.
The first incident was reported on July 15, and since then there have been several more mutilations. The killer slices and disembowels adult cats from head to tail then throws their mutilated carcasses into several yards in the Manenberg area.
The person has been described as a sick individual who is a menace to society – and the behaviour is considered very dangerous for both animals and people.
Several stories have been written and the story has gathered international attention but the killer remains at large. The last option is for a reward to be offered for the community to come forward with the name of the person responsible. It is alleged that there are some community members who do know the person is but they are scared for their lives.
“We are saddened to report that despite our best efforts and exhaustive media coverage the senseless killing spree has escalated both in numbers and intensity. Over the past 24 hours another 4 cats have been found disembowelled. This has to stop!” AWS said.
According to AWS, Manenberg SAPS won’t pursue the matter until a “credible witness” comes forward or they have a suspect for them to arrest.
“This is unacceptable and represents a contravention of National Instruction 3 of 2011. This dereliction of duty has been reported to the Western Cape Provincial Minister of Community Safety Albert Fritz who will be swift to act,” AWS said.
They hope that the incentive will bring more information which will lead them to the killer. If you have any information, please contact them at 021 692 2626 or 082 601 1761 or you can e-mail inspector@awscape.org.za
