Search operations to find the 38-year-old bodyboarder who went missing on Tuesday, 13 April were called off today.
Robert Walter Ernst Frauenstein, a seasoned bodyboarder from East London, went out into the surf at Chintsa Beach in the morning and never returned. His board washed up later in the day with what appeared to be bite marks on it.
The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) immediately issued a warning of shark activity for beach-goers in the area.
Days later the teeth marks were confirmed to be that of a great white shark. A rescue operation has been ongoing in the hope to find Frauenstein but on Wednesday the search was called off.
Police spokesperson, Captain Khaya Tonjeni, said Wednesday was the last day for the search.
He added that they had conducted an extensive search with no luck.
Buffalo City Metro and NSRI have issued a warning to bathers to be extra cautious along the coastline between East London and Chintsa Beach.
