Not so, says the owners of the shanty town themed luxury resort operated by Emoya Luxury Hotel and Spa in Bloemfontein in South Africa.
Have a look at the images in this post. At first glance your will be forgiven for thinking these are shacks like any of the million others in South Africa. But they are not. At R550 a night they offer interior luxury and a unique tourist experience, albeit a bit controversial.
The township themed hotel and resort consist of a dozen shacks made from scrap wood and corrugated metal. All the shacks are equipped with conveniences such as running water, electricity, under-floor heating and even wireless Internet access but to make the stay authentic, it has been installed paraffin lamps, candles and battery-operated radios, as well as a communal ‘long-drop’ toilet.
Each shack is self-catering with a full kitchen and can sleep four people. Emoya management says the idea of a shack-themed started when overseas visitors suggested that they would like to sleep in a real shanty town rather than seeing them from a tour bus.
